1-2-3-4 Cake

1 C butter, margarine or vegetable oil
2 C sugar
3 C flour
4 eggs
1 teaspoon each of soda, baking powder and salt
1 C of any type of liquid, such as milk, water, or lemon juice

A delicious sheet cake, layer cake or cupcakes. The recipe is originally from the 1940s. See an updated lemon version here.

Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 9×13 pan, or an 8×8 pan for a half recipe. Make sure all ingredients are at room temperature.

Cream butter and sugar. Beat until fluffy, about five minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Stir all dry ingredients together. Alternate liquid and dry ingredients to batter.

Pour into prepared pan. Bake until center tests done. 40-45 minutes for a 9×13 pan; 35 minutes for an 8×8 pan.
