Asian Pear Crisp

2.5 pounds Asian pears
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 tsp garam masala
1/4 tsp cardamom powder
1/4 tsp powdered ginger
1/8 tsp powdered cloves
1/8 tsp salt

Topping:
4 tbsp butter
3/8 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 cup brown sugar

Peel and core pears. Slice thinly. Toss with vinegar or lemon juice in a bowl. Add spices, salt, and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Place in a buttered baking dish, approximately 8 or 9″ square.

Cut butter up in the flour and remaining 1/4 cup sugar. (A food processor works well for this.) Sprinkle this mixture over the top of the fruit.

Bake at 375° for 25 – 35 minutes, until pears are soft but have not lost their shape.

Serve warm with 1/2 & 1/2, or with ice cream.

2019 – much too soupy. Need to add some thickener to sliced pears before baking. Good flavor. Topping is minimal and sort of gummy. See regular apple crisp topping for ideas.
