Sugar and Spice Stars

1 cup pecans
3 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 large eggs

Orange frosting
3 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp grated orange peel
3 tbsp orange juice

Whirl nuts in food processor until finely ground. Mix with dry ingredients. Cream butter and sugar; beat in eggs. Add flour mixture and blend thoroughly. Cover and chill dough until cold, at least 2 hours, or as long as three days.

Roll dough out in batches until it is 3/8″ thick. Cut into stars with floured cookie cutters. Place 1″ apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° until edges are golden, about 8 minutes. Transfer to racks to cool. Lightly frost cookies, thinning frosting if necessary with a few drops of liquid. Let stand until dry. Store airtight. Makes about 10 dozen.
