1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
4 1/2 tsp dry yeast
4+ cups flour
1 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
Combine sugar, salt, yeast, and 1 cup flour. Heat milk and butter until very warm (120° to 130° F.). Gradually beat liquid into dry ingredients. Beat two minutes. Beat in egg and 1 cup flour. Beat two more minutes. Add enough additional flour to make a soft dough (2 cups or more). Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Shape into a ball, put in a greased bowl, and let rise until doubled, about an hour.
Punch down dough. Divide dough into 24 rolls. Cover and let rise. Bake for 10 minutes at 400°.
